Leicester College & Leicester City Council Visit, Pioneer Park

Wilten were delighted to host Leicester College and members from Leicester City Council on site at Pioneer Park on Tuesday 21st November. The visit provided the students with an insight into the different career pathways and opportunities available within the construction industry.

Over the course of the following 4 weeks, Wilten Construction are hosting 4 site visits to Pioneer Park. For each visit, we are expecting 20 x 16-18year old students from the Level 1 & Level 2 Construction Course that focuses on introducing the students into the industry. The aims of the visits are to show the students how a construction site operates and what the construction industry looks like in the real world, rather than in a workshop setting.

During the first visit, the students engaged in a presentation that aimed to broaden their understanding of the range of careers available in our field of work. Our aim was to inspire and provide the students with ideas for their future careers.

The presentation covered various aspects including an introduction to Wilten Construction, the different routes of entry into the industry, an overview of different job roles, a discussion on health and safety, and a talk from our Project Manager and HSEQ Manager.

Our Senior Project Manager took the students on a tour around the site to see the project being delivered in partnership with our supply chain. They saw groundworks, brick laying, cladding, concreting, mechanical and electrical works, dry lining, and stud walling taking place on site.

Sandra Rieger, Senior Economic Regeneration Officer Leicester City Council:

"The students had never experienced a construction site before, and so the visit was both interesting and informative. Wilten explained about the building process and the importance of health and safety on site. They also took the time to interact with the students to make the visit relevant to the group’s interests. The construction industry is keen to attract young people and so it is important that we give them an insight into the sector".

Crystal Carter, Workspace Development Manager Dock Space City said:

"This build project is an expansion of our Dock workspaces for high tech and innovative business in Space City and it is amazing to be able to contribute to the learning of our next generation in the construction sector in this work experience visit".

Ross Keymer, Leicester College said:

"It was great to see how happy the Wilten staff were to give up their time showing our students around. Being in such a fast-moving environment it can’t be the easiest thing to do. The students had an informative tour around the site, a talk on the ins and outs of the business and gained some valuable insight into the industry they’re studying".

We are proud to be strengthening our connection with the local community and delivering social value for Leicester through engagement with schools and colleges, skills development, and local employment. We look forward to continuing to do so on Pioneer Park and in the future.

We are excited to host the other groups of students from Leicester College over the coming weeks!
