At Wilten, we're excited to celebrate "Skills for Life" in support of National Apprenticeship Week 2024. Our approach is based on supporting all our employees to develop their skills and knowledge for a rewarding career. We are implementing tailored personal development reviews and career development pathways to prepare our team for upward growth within our industry.

Our commitment to training and skills development incorporates enrolling employees in part-time university / college courses to support them in their key roles in the industry. This approach has brought numerous benefits to Wilten and our workforce as our employees are gaining specialist knowledge and skills that are being directly applied in their day-to-day roles, resulting in increased efficiency, productivity, and quality of work.

We are committed to the professional growth of our employees, equipping them with additional qualifications, training, and education, enhancing our reputation for raising the bar for our employees within the industry. We support their leadership development which is gained through learning and adopting various leadership and management skills, preparing our people for progression and promotion through their time at Wilten Construction.

As a result, we have found that our team are bringing fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a willingness to adapt to industry trends.

Below, we celebrate some of our key staff who are currently undertaking part-time education alongside their full-time employment at Wilten. We wanted to hear a little bit about their journeys and how they are shaping their futures through their degree apprenticeships and higher technical qualifications:

Lydia Fry

MSc in Quantity Surveying Nottingham University.

"I have found studying at university alongside working beneficial to further developing my skills and knowledge in Quantity Surveying and helping to gain further confidence in what I do. Currently, I have gained further understanding of law and business elements in construction as well as developing my technological understanding, which I can apply to my everyday work. I still have a lot to learn, however I am excited to expand my knowledge and to apply this into my everyday work".

Xavier Brettle-West

Degree-apprenticeship: Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management Nottingham Trent University.

"Being a part of a Degree Apprenticeship helps me develop a more in depth understanding of my role as a Quantity Surveyor as well as a greater appreciation of the Construction Industry as a whole. Learning in this way means that I get to look at things in both a hands on practical approach when in the workplace, as well as in a theoretical sense when I am at university. The knowledge and exposure I am able to achieve from getting my qualifications this way is truly invaluable".

Laura Waite

Higher Technical Qualification at L4 & L5 (Pearson BTEC RQF Higher National in Construction 2023 (HTQ) Suite) Moulton College.

"My course has massively helped my development in becoming a certified estimator. There have been many lessons that have helped me understand things further, but the lessons on ground contamination and how to review a site investigation report have been massively beneficial. This is especially helpful for reviewing tenders and how I see the potential future projects. I have grown in confidence in my job, but also in myself. Going back into education has been a huge commitment but a very exciting one. I have learnt a lot more about other roles within the industry through meeting people at college, developing my understanding of the industry as a whole".
