As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2025, Wilten are highlighting the daily theme of T Level Thursday. We are celebrating #TLevelThursday and the student/s we have hosted from Leicester College on site for industry visits and industry placements.

So far, our team on site delivering Leicester College's Aeronautical and Space Technology Centre have hosted two site visits for 40,Level 1, T-Level students from plumbing and electrical courses. In April, we will welcome another group of 30 students from electrical and carpentry courses.
During the T Level site visits, our Project Manager and Site Manager delivered a tailored presentation and talk, focusing on the students' courses. This was followed by a site tour, allowing students to see the project's progress firsthand and ask questions, connecting their classroom learning to real-world construction.
We have two students from Leicester College scheduled to begin their 35-hour work experience placements on site, shadowing our project team. The first student will start next week, with the second placement in April. The placements will cover a range of topics across 5 days, providing the students with the opportunity input into the project team and the daily site activities, bringing new ideas and a fresh perspectives.

“I thought the site visit was very Informative as the video they played helped expand my understanding. As well as this the tour of the site helped me visualise the construction process”.

“The visit gave me a proper insight onto what to expect if I do ever get a chance to work on site. In general I was satisfied with the experience as I learnt a few new things about how a site works, especially how challenging some of the projects can be, I remember they told us that they have to seal up the ground so that radon gasses don't escape or that they needed to create a pathway for the crane to arrive on site and how it needed to be on a platform as it was too heavy and had a risk of the ground collapsing underneath. So, I definitely understand a lot better just how much has to be thought about and the risks that it may not only have to the plot of land but also to the local area. This experience taught me how well organised the site plans are seeing the Gantt chart on the wall and how detailed it was. It was genuinely a great experience that is useful to withhold at such an early time. I am glad to have received this opportunity to have a chance to see what we have learnt in class be put into a real scenario”.

“Our visit to Wilten’s construction site was excellent. The team was very professional and made sure everything was well planned and easy to understand. They shared useful information and explained things clearly, making the visit both interesting and helpful. What stood out the most was how friendly and welcoming the staff were. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel comfortable and were happy to answer all our questions. Overall, it was a fantastic experience”.
Derek Watters – Programme Lead - Electrical Installation said:
“The trip was well structure and organised. The first thing I noticed was the emphasis on health & safety - being met at the site gate and directed to the site offices showed our learners the need for organisation in this dangerous environment. The induction video was excellent and covered a range of topic areas that we have teaching as the syllabus for the Construction Core unit - from safety on site, personal and safe working procedures to legal and environmental considerations. The Wilten construction team (Marcus and Millie) showed real professionalism and encouraged our young students to ask questions which was really engaging. The answers to these questions proved very helpful and showed the students the link to their current studies. The site walk was really good with a range of different groundwork activities on show. The trip was really worthwhile and I learnt about the Radon barrier, which I had not come across before. I could have stayed all day”.
T Levels are qualifications for 16 to 19 year olds taken after GCSEs. They are broadly equivalent to 3 A levels and focus on technical and vocational skills. There are now over 21 T Levels now on offer to students with many of these students successfully progressing on to apprenticeship programmes.
T Level Thursday is a great opportunity to:
Highlight T Levels as a high quality, world-class qualification
Help raise awareness of them in your skills area, industry sector, and your region
Show how they are an excellent route to apprenticeships, HTQs and full time employment
Encourage employers to offer industry placements
We will be sharing more success stories soon following the T Level Placements on site next week and in April, so keep an eye out for how the placements benefited the students involved.
We are proud to be strengthening our connection with the local community and delivering social value for Leicester through engagement with schools and colleges, skills development, and local employment.
